Kimberly D. Crisp, MA - Licensed Professional Counselor. Kimberly has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Child and Family Studies and a Master of Arts Degree in Clinical Psychology, both from The University of Texas of the Permian Basin. She has been working as a private practitioner at and independent contractor with Healing Through Hope Counseling Center since March of 2011. Kimberly has completed Level One of the Gottman Method Couples Therapy training. She uses the Gottman Institute’s empirically researched techniques, in addition to other counseling modalities, to help her couples learn practical skills they can apply in their daily lives to improve the quality and satisfaction of their relationships. Kimberly utilizes several therapeutic disciplines including EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy. Created in the late 1980s by Francine Shapiro, EMDR was “originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories.” Everyone experiences things that are distressing and disturbing. That is trauma. Small ‘t’ traumas are events that exceed our capacity to cope and cause a disruption in emotional functioning while large ‘T’ traumas are extraordinary and significant events that leaves the individual feeling powerless and possessing little control. EMDR has been used to treat a variety of issues that stem from negative core beliefs and maladaptive neural pathways that develop from traumatic events. Kimberly believes that “therapy is too good to be limited to the sick” (Polster) and feels that anyone can benefit from the support and encouragement provided by a healthy therapeutic relationship. Kimberly feels that her job as a counselor is to educate and empower her clients to change their own lives in order to achieve their goals. The role of the therapist is to facilitate, not to dictate. Among her areas of expertise are adolescent issues, depression, anxiety, women's issues, parenting, and relationship counseling. She works with individuals, couples, adolescents, families, and groups. Fees are based on a sliding scale determined by proof of family income and range from $80 to $130 per session.
